Baby Food Project: Part 1

Posted on Dec 30th by Kate

I got pregnant before Jeebs started solid foods. There was a three and a half week moment in time when I was full-time nursing, working 7:00am-5:00pm, and was unknowingly gestating the fetus now known as the Eze. In those three weeks, I lost 13 lbs. Jeebs has always had the royal treatment when it comes to food. He was exclusively breast milk fed until he was more than 7 months old. At that time, we were…

Our kids are six months old and 21 months old as I write this. They are both still in diapers and they both take naps (Eze takes 3 short naps a day, and Jeebs takes 1-2 naps depending on his mood). If we're working around naps, our window of opportunity is fairly short for family outings (and believe me, in order to survive we need to work around naps). Our best times for activities fall in…

The Worst Part of Having Two Babies

Posted on Dec 19th by Kate

Check out what 3 weeks worth of laundry for a family of four with two babies looks like: basically the entire space of a 9x10 room, at least 2 feet high on average. That's 21 loads of laundry. 21 loads.

And this is NOT including adult sheets and towels. Tell you what, I will always appreciate the convenience of in-unit laundry after this. Yes, that's right, I go three buildings over in the snow…

Mich definitely made me feel like I could re-join the human race, which is absolutely a feat if you've been pregnant for 18 of the last 24 months. Back to back pregnancies take everything out of a girl. They change you entirely - hormonally, physically, mentally. Even if you look exactly the same as before to the outside world, you are going to feel different inside. Not necessarily bad-different, but different, for sure. You'll be…

Why Am I Here?

Posted on Dec 8th by Kate

Ok, so I don't ask myself the philosophical questions much. I don't have time for that. But I started this blog last March, didn't get around to writing anything in it until last week, and now I'm struggling to figure out why I am doing this and where I fit in. Every blog I read is quippy and full of sarcasm. I'm not quippy or sarcastic, really. I'm earnest and funny in an ironic Canadian…

Home Life

Posted on Dec 8th by Kate

Although I had lived alone since I was 18, I knew very little about creating it. When I married T, I was already a decent cook, and my mother had proudly taught me how to clean (ahem, properly, like, hands and knees style) and do laundry, but I knew nothing about creating a deliberately orchestrated domestic sphere. And it became evident quickly. Our first year of marriage was mired with obstacles: unemployment, depression, the unexpected news…

This is hard. It's 7:00pm. Both children are asleep, after sub-par to non-existent naps today. "Here's what I'm gonna do," says T, "I'm gonna clean up in here a bit, put away some of the groceries, then I'm going to sterilize bottles, and see if SAS works on the desktop, then I'll take out the trash, go pick up the laundry...then I'm sure I'll do something else." Have I mentioned he's amazing? The list is endless, and it's…

Celebrating Small Wins

Posted on Dec 1st by Kate

Today was a good day. Nothing momentous happened, but T is imminently (as we speak) finishing his application for the next potential step in [his]our life. Something to celebrate indeed. Like the fact that I might get to see him again, and I don't mean at 4:30 a.m. when I'm desperately calling for him on the baby monitor (because he's still awake working on schoolwork) and Eze has decided that it's time to wake up,…
